Triple Crown Nominations Announced; Few Surprises

Unbeaten Breeders’ Cup Juvenile victor Game Winner headed a list of 362 horses who were nominated to the Triple Crown series, according to the list released after the first nomination deadline passed.

Other Derby hopefuls such as Improbable, Instagrand, Mucho Gusto, Tax and Knicks Go also paid the $600 fee to be nominated. Four fillies were nominated, including multiple stakes winner Bellafina and
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Jaywalk.

Steve Asmussen led all trainers with 27 nominations. Bob Baffert, trainer of Game Winner, tied Chad Brown and Todd Pletcher with 17 nominations each.

Calumet Farm led all owners with 13 nominations, including six as a breeder. Godolphin led all breeders with seven nominees.

Tapit was the leading sire of the nominees, with 19 horses nominated. He was followed by Into Mischief was next with 15 and Curlin with 13.

Some notable colts that were surprisingly not on the list include Champagne Stakes winner Complexity, last Saturday’s Swale Stakes winner Call Paul, Ellis Park Juvenile winner Tobacco Road, and Tight Ten. Jefe, Pole Setter and Sombeyay had Derby points but were not nominated.dition to Baffert, Chad Brown and Todd Pletcher also had 17 nominees.

This doesn’t mean that horses not nominated will not run in the big three races. They have until April 1 to pay a $6,000 nomination fee (up from $600), or pay large sums of money to any of the races as a supplemental entry.
