Gray Attempt Holds off Rivals in Smarty Jones

Gray Attempt took the early lead in Friday’s Smarty Jones Stakes, then held off late charges by Long Range Toddy and Bankor to win 10 points in the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, the son of Graydar took a one-length lead coming for home in the 1-mile race, but was challenged in the homestretch by Bankor to his right and Long Range Toddy to his left. He managed to win by a neck over Long Range Toddy, with Bankor just behind for third.

It was the third win in four tries for Gray Attempt, is expected to continue running at Oaklawn, with the Feb. 18 Southwest Stakes next on his path to Churchill Downs.
