Clever Trevor winner Long Range Toddy, the sixth choice at 12-1, made a bold move in the homestretch and hung on to win the Springboard Mile Sunday.
The win rewarded thee son of Take Charge Indy 10 points toward the Kentucky Derby. It was his third win in four starts.
Marquis Prince took the lead briefly but was overtaken by longshot Dobbins G, who set the pace for most of the race. As the horses entered the homestretch, Richard Eramia, Long Range Toddy’s jockey, found himself in the second row of horses and saw nowhere to go in front of him. He abruptly sent Long Range Toddy to the outside in the homestretch and overtook Dunph, who had just managed to take the lead from the tired pacesetters.
Long Range Toddy, built up a comfortable leading heading to the finish but just managed to hold off a hard-charging Bankit to win by a neck. Dunph finished third, and Tone Broke managed fourth.
Favorite Epic Dreamer, the son of Orb and winner his last time out at a mile and 1/16, finished a disappointing sixth after being bumped by Bankit in the homestretch.
