Post positions for the 144th Kentucky Derby were drawn today, and it was bad luck for Firenze Fire.
Firenze Fire, the horse that proves that if you run enough, you too can get in the Kentucky Derby, drew the first position, generally considered the kiss of death because of all the bumping and boxing in that goes on in the giant 20-horse field.
Another bad-luck colt was Solomini, who drew the no. 17 post. No horse has ever won the Derby from the no. 17 post.
Most of the favorites drew acceptable positions, with Justify getting a prime position at no. 7. Good Magic is beside him at no. 6, and Audible is at no. 5. Watch those three when the gates open to see who gets the best start.
Bolt d’Oro got no. 11, with Mendelssohn getting some bad luck at no. 14. Magnum Moon drew no. 16, and Vino Rosso is all the way out in the no. 18 post.
Combatant drew the outside post at no. 20.
What does all this mean? It means Justify will probably move toward the lead, and Promises Fulfilled, at no. 3, will have to have a perfect start to challenge him. Magnum Moon will probably be racing to the front as well, making a diagonal route to the rail. And the rest will be bumping and grinding for position. Whoever gets the lucky ride may be our next Derby winner.
