Firenze Fire, off a disappointing finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last year, squeezed a 1/2 length victory over Seven Trumpets in the Jerome Stakes.
The race, which had been delayed because of the cold weather, began with Seven Trumpets setting a slow pace. Firenze Fire was last and seemed content to stay that way until the far turn. He then went four wide trying to catch Seven Trumpets and seemed set to zoom past him at the eighth pole.
But Firenze Fire slowed the pace and Seven Trumpets hung on stubbornly to the lead. It wasn’t until the final sixteenth that Firenze Fire began to close the gap and overtake Seven Trumpets for the win.
It was supposed to be an easy win for Firenze Fire, who was the 2-5 favorite and was not expecting much competition in the Jerome. It’s hard to say whether Seven Trumpets is a quality horse or Firenze Fire is not. I’d argue the latter.
Coltandmississippi finished third.
