Tapwrit, who finished second in last month’s Sam F. Davis Stakes, made a bold claim to the Kentucky Derby with an impressive 4 1/2 length victory over State of Honor.
The gray son of successful sire Tapit stayed off the pace for much of the race until jockey Jose Ortiz threaded him between horses on the far turn. Once he was clear of traffic, Tapwrit moved quickly and strongly and took the lead from pace-setter State of Honor. He easily pulled away for the win, setting a new stakes record in the process.
Tapwrit earned 50 points for the win, giving him 54 in the points race.
Wild Shot finished third.
