It was one of those rare races in which horses raced one and two, within a length of each other, for the entire race, and then battled down the stretch in a thrilling finish that saw Gormley nose out American Anthem in the Sham Stakes.
Gormley got out to the quick lead, but American Anthem regained it with the inside position. The two battled it out on the backstretch, with Gormley unable to get within a half length of American Anthem.
As they rounded into the far turn, Gormley slowly began to chip away at the lead until the two were neck and neck entering the homestretch.
They stayed that way for the entire homestretch, with the more experienced Gormley finally sticking a nose in front in a photo finish.
Big Hit was far behind in third place.
