It was close for a while, but Mastery proved to be the leading colt coming out of the West for the Kentucky Derby with a convincing 7 1/4 victory in the Los Alamitos Futurity.
Bobby Abu Dhabi broke well, but Mastery went straight for him, battling him down the backstretch, the two exchanging leads as they went 1/2 mile in 45.6 seconds. Into the far turn, the two continued neck and neck as Irap moved up to challenge them at the head of the stretch.
It was a three-horse race. Or was it? Jockey Mike Smith went to the whip with his left hand, and Mastery began to pull away from a tiring Bobby Abud Dhabi and Irap, who couldn’t keep the pace. The odds-on favorite, Mastery won going away over Irap, finishing only 3/5 of a second off the track record for 1 1/16 miles.
Dangerfield closed for third, another 5 3/4 lengths behind.
