Mo Town, another son of Uncle Mo, ran down the favorite Takaful in the homestretch en route to a 2-1/2 length victory over No Dozing in the $300,000 Remsen Stakes.
Takaful, going off at 4-5, took a huge early lead of about five lengths over the rest of the field going into the backstretch. As he entered the far turn, Mo Town had made up most of the ground but still remained a length off the lead.
They stayed that way until the homestretch, when Takaful began to run out of gas. Mo Town took advantage of the situation and ran down the favorite, managing to hold off a fast-closing No Dozing at the finish. Takaful hung on to finish third by a nose over Win with Pride.
Mo Town was coming off a seven-length maiden victory at Belmont on Sept. 24. Takaful had also won a maiden race at Belmont, but it was only 6 1/2 furlongs long. Some wondered if making the jump to 1 1/8 miles was too severe.
