Klimt, the odds-on-favorite to win the FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita, came up short as Gormley, fresh off his maiden win, cruised to a three-length victory.
Gormley led from start to finish, with Klimt having to come from way off the pace to mount a challenge. Gormley showed he had some gas in the tank by increasing his lead down the homestretch. He first led by one length over Midnight Pleasure, then withstood a challenge around the far turn by Straight Fire, who finished third.
The beginning of the race was marked by a riderless horse, Secret House, breaking from the post because his rider, Santiago Gonzalez, stepped off the horse just before the gates opened. It’s the second time in one week Gonzalez has done that.
Gormley earned 10 points toward the Kentucky Derby with the win.
