California Diamond Wins Barretts Juvenile

In a mild upset, California Diamond came from way off the pace to win his maiden, defeating, Crosscheck Carlos and 4-5 favorite Big League in the $100,000 Barretts Juvenile at Los Alamitos.

Turning into the homestretch, California Diamond was boxed in behind a wall of horses. But given the long homestretch at Los Alamitos, jockey Kent Desormeaux was able to find daylight between horses and pulled away in the final furlong to win by 1 1/4 lengths over Crosscheck Carlos. Big League finished third.

In the colt’s first two races, he finished second in two stakes during the Del Mar summer meeting.
