An already clouded Kentucky Derby Picture just turned into a thick fog as Creator, a lightly regarded 11-1 shot, came from last to outrun a very tired Arkansas Derby pack to win the $1 million Derby prep.
As expected, Gettysburg and Cupid battled it out for most of the race, setting fast fractions at each pole. As the group turned for home, the two began to tire, leaving the horses running from off the pace to take advantage of the fast pace. Creator, the gray son of Tapit, shot from between horses, outgunning Whitmore and Suddenbreakingnews to beat the latter by a length. Whitmore was third.
It gave Creator an instant ticket to Louisville, giving him 100 points in the Kentucky Derby race. Cupid still has enough points to earn him a spot in the Derby, but his 10th place showing had his handlers wondering if he had what it took to take a mile and a quarter.
Gettysburg hung on for fifth, but he doesn’t have enough points to go to the Derby and will probably be prepped for the Preakness or later race.
Creator completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.14.
