It’s hard to say what is the more surprising headline: Destin wins the Tampa Bay Derby, or Brody’s Cause finishes seventh.
Both were shockers. Destin overtook his stablemate Outwork in the final sixteenth of a mile to win the race by 1 length. Star Hill was seven lengths back leading the rest of the pack.
Outwork took an early lead into the first turn, followed by Riker. Destin was a well-placed third and stalked the leaders until the middle of the far turn, when he passed a tiring Riker and challenged the leader. It looked like Outwork was going to turn back the challenge, but the iron gray colt found another gear and pulled away in the homestretch.
Brody’s Cause, never a threat, finished 12 lengths back in seventh place and did not show the closing kick that made him a contender as a two-year-old.
Both Destin and Outwork are trained by Todd Pletcher, who told Daily Racing Form that Destin moved forward in this race “and shows the Sam Davis was legit. It seems like he’s getting a little more professional each time and learning how to polish off his races.”
