Ho Hum, It’s Nyquist Again

In what is beginning to be a familiar pattern, Nyquist, held off Exaggerator down the stretch to win his sixth straight race in the San Vicente Stakes.

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and champion 2-year-old didn’t win any points for this race, since it’s not on the Kentucky Derby race schedule, but he still looked impressive, covering the seven furlongs in 1:20.71, the third fastest in stakes history.

Nyquist started well, sharing the lead with Sheikh of Sheikhs, while Exaggerator stalked the two in third place. At the far turn, Sheikh of Sheikhs faded, leaving Exaggerator to make his move, but it was not enough as Nyquist pulled away from his closest competitor.

Despite an undefeated record, Nyquist still has his critics, who believe the colt isn’t bred to go the Derby distance and hasn’t been setting the Beyer speed figures on fire. But his debut certainly showed that his two-year-old season was no fluke, and until someone beats him, he has to be considered the favorite.
