What can $2.2 million buy you? If you’re lucky, it’ll get you a Kentucky Derby favorite.
The gray Tapit colt, purchased as a yearling by Shadwell Stable at that unbelievable amount, is now giving his owners some payback. He’s now challenging Nyquist as a Derby favorite after his 3 1/2 length victory over his only real competition, Champagne Stakes winner Greenpointcrusader, in the $350,000 Holy Bull Stakes Saturday.
Mohaymen seemed to toy with the field of six at Gulfstream Park, settling in at third position, overtaking the tiring pace setter Perfect Saint and challenging Greenpointcrusader heading into the far turn.
Greepointcrusader didn’t give up the lead easily, at one point matching Mohaymen stride for stride, but as they entered the homestretch Mohaymen turned on a little extra speed and cruised to the victory.
Fellowship finished third.
The win moves Mohaymen into second place in the Kentucky Derby standings with 20 points, 8 behind Nyquist.
