Heavily favored Mo Spirit came from off the pace Saturday, winning the Los Alamitos Futurity by 1 1/4 lengths over his stablemate, Toews On Ice.
The son of Eskendereya, who just recently finished second in the Kentucky Jockey Club, raced from behind under the cautious restraint of jockey Gary Stevens, waiting patiently in sixth place. As the 2-year-olds headed into the final turn, Stevens took his colt outside to challenge the leaders.
At first it looked like Mo Spirit and Toews On Ice would go head to head for the final sixteenth, but Mo Spirit pulled away as Toews On Ice seemed to slow down toward the finish. I’malreadythere finished six lengths behind in third.
The win gives Mo Spirit two wins in four starts.
