Two grays made names for themselves in the 2016 Kentucky Derby talk yesterday with wins in two races that count toward the point standings for the Derby.
First, Mohaymen stayed undefeated Saturday, defeating Flexibility by two lengths in the Grade II Remsen Stakes. The son of Tapit stalked the pace setters, Donegal Moon and Flexibility, for most of the race but seemed boxed in going into the far turn.
Spotting a bit of daylight between the two front runners, jockey Junior Alvarado took advantage, shooting Mohaymen toward the front in the seemingly tiny space and fighting off Flexibility in the homestretch, winning pulling away for his third win in as many tries. Gift Box finished third.
Meanwhile, Airoforce, the 7-2 second pick in the Kentucky Jockey Club, outdueled the favorite Mor Spirit to win the Grade II Stakes at Churchill Downs, winning 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby race.
The son of Colonel John came from off the pace, pulling even with Mor Spirit and Gun Runner before pulling away to win by 1 3/4 lengths on a very sloppy track. The win was impressive considering the conditions; the drive that Airoforce showed in the homestretch equaled what Mohaymen did on a fast track.
The wins continues the impressive outing by some colts that are showing early signs of greatness, including Exaggerator and Nyquist. Whether they will continue their winning ways as 3-year-olds remains to be seen, but they’ve certainly been impressive so far.
