Not surprisingly, Nyquist is the front runner in early betting for the 2016 Kentucky Derby, the Louisville Courier-Journal reports.
The undefeated son of Uncle Mo is the 20-1 favorite to take the Derby, according to Wynn Las Vegas. His main rival, Swipe, is tied for second at 25-1.
Other notables include Greenpointcrusader (25-1), Mohaymen (30-1) and Brody’s Cause (35-1).
Okay, it’s early. Very early. But this is shaping up to be – dare I say it – a rivalry similar to Affirmed and Alydar. These two colts finished 1-2 in their last three races. Swipe, who finished second in all three, is a come-from behind horse (like Alydar). Nyquist won the first two meetings by an average of 4.5 lengths, but the FrontRunner Stakes featured a stretch run reminiscent of the 1978 Preakness, with Nyquist fighting off Swipe to win by less than a length.
Wouldn’t it be great to see them battle it out in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile and continue their rivalry throughout 2016? We can only hope.
