Silver Prospector took advantage of Tiz the Law’s troubles on the backstretch, wrestling the lead from longshot New Eagle in the stretch and held off the favorite to win the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes.
The light gray son of War Front was set up nicely for a run at the finish, unlike Tiz the Law, who was pinned on the inside for most of the race. But even when jockey Manny Franco squeezed him through an opening between New Eagle and South Bend in the stretch, he still didn’t have enough to catch Silver Prospector.
80-1 shot Finnick The Fierce outran Tiz the Law for second.
The win was only the second of Silver Prospector’s career in six starts. His upset victory now clouds the Eclipse Award for 2-Year-Old-Colt of the Year, which probably could have been Tiz the Law’s had he won Saturday.
With the win, Silver Prospector gained 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
