The Champagne Stakes may be one of the more prestigious 2-year-old prep races of the year, but Maxfield turned in one of the most impressive performances of the year in the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland today.
The son of Street Sense was next to last along the backstretch but slung his way around the far turn, overtaking the field and setting his sights on the favorite, Gouverneur Morris.
It wasn’t close. Maxfield continued his momentum, shot past Gouverneur Morris and cruised to a 5 1/2-length victory.
In the prestigious Champagne Stakes, Tiz the Law overtook Gozilla and favorite Green Light Go in the stretch to notch a win for the famed Sackatoga Stable – the same group that owned 2003 Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide.
However, one of the members of Sackatoga Stables told Daily Racing Form that Tiz the Law wouldn’t be making the trip to Santa Anita for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Nov. 1, citing “some concerns about that racetrack.”
Both horses earned 10 points each on the Road to the 2020 Kentucky Derby.
