Dennis’ Moment Is for Real

Dennis’ Moment proved Saturday that his 19 1/2 maiden win in July was no fluke, coasting to a 2-length victory in the GIII Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs.

The “win and you’re in” victory earns Dennis’ Moment a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Nov. 1.

And what a moment it was. The 2-year-old colt lay back in fourth place for most of the beginning of the race before jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. urged him on. He easily passed pacesetter Juggernaut, going three wide around the far turn and accelerating into a 5-length lead at one point.

Ortiz put him under wraps for the final 1/16 of a mile, allowing Scabbard to race up and make it look closer than it was.

The Dale Romans-trained colt set a track record while earning the first 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
