Does anyone want to win the Derby this year?

Following last week’s upset win by Omaha Beach over Game Winner, War of Will may have fallen off the Derby trail yesterday with a ninth-place finish in the Louisiana Derby.

War of Will’s poor showing was caused by a pulled muscle. He broke awkwardly from the gate but was fourth on the backstretch before fading in the last few furlongs. Instead, longshot By My Standards became the front-runner on the Road to the Kentucky Derby with a one-length victory over Spinoff.

Leminscate set the early fractions as Sueno, who finished third, stalked him. The leader faded on the far turn as Country House and Spinoff went for the lead. Jockey Gabriel Saez, riding By My Standards, found an opening near the rail and pushed the colt toward it, allowing him to race toward the lead.

After a short battle with Spinoff, By My Standards pulled away in the last sixteenth. Country House was fourth.

Another favorite fell Sunday in the Sunland Derby, when Mucho Gusto faded in the homestretch, giving way to Cutting Humor. Mucho Gusto set lightning fast fractions at the beginning but tired as Cutting Humor and Anothertwistafate made their moves on the far turn. Cutting Humor held the lead throughout the homestretch but had to withstand a hard-charging Anothertwistafate to win by a head.

Mucho Gusto had to settle for third. Wicked Indeed was fourth.

The victories by Cutting Humor and By My Standards throw more curveballs into the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Early favorite Improbable also lost last week, leaving no one horse as a clear front-runner for the Derby, which is less than six weeks away.
