Complexity Cruises in Champagne

Complexity led from wire to wire in the prestigious Champagne Stakes, earning a bid to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with a three-length victory over a courageous Code of Honor.

Complexity set fast fractions for the opening half mile while opening up a two-length lead over the rest of the pack. Several horses tried to make a run around the turn, but it was Code of Honor, who stumbled at the start, who had to make a charge five wide around the turn, losing valuable ground.

In spite of the bad start and far turn, Code of Honor began to make up ground, but Complexity, trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Jose Ortiz, simply kicked it into a higher gear and won easily. It was another three lengths back to Call Paul, who outdueled Aurelius Maximus for third.

Complexity is the son of Maclean’s Music out of the mare Goldfield.
