Game Winner: Another Weapon in Baffert’s Arsenal?

Game Winner extended his record to an unbeaten 3 for 3 with an impressive win in the inaugural American Pharoah Stakes. It’s yet another horse in Baffert’s barn that looks to make a run for the Roses next May.

Rowayton took the early lead in the two-turn race, with Game Winner staying right with him the entire way, Gunmetal Gray settling for third two lengths back. When the two came out of the far turn, Game Winner suddenly drew it into a higher gear and passed Rowayton, slowly at first, and then pulling away with ease. Gunmental Gray passed Rowayton to settle for second, five lengths back of a runaway Game Winner.

The victory was a “win-and-you’re-in” spot for Game Winner, who can now compete in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in November.  He also won 10 points in the Kentucky Derby points standings.

Game Winner joins Roadster in Baffert’s cadre of two-year-olds that may race in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Yet to be tested are Magic on Tap, Much Better and Tale of the Union.
