Rebel: It’s Malagacy

Malagacy took advantage of a dismal showing by 8-5 favorite American Anthem, taking the lead in the homestretch to win the $900,000 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn.

Malagacy, who had won his previous two races by a combined 22 lengths, stalked the leader, Uncontested, and overcame some traffic around the far turn to take the lead.

After Malagacy fought off Uncontested, here came Untrapped, as if shot out of a cannon, and he seemed to easily position himself for victory, challenging for the lead. But Malagacy held him off, and pulled away for the victory by two lengths over Sonneteer.

American Anthem finished 10th.
