Even-money favorite Uncontested led for most of the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes, but didn’t have the stamina to outlast One Liner, who pulled away in the middle of the stretch to win by four lengths over Petrov.
Uncontested drew away first by a length and a half over Petrov, while One Liner was content to stay in fourth position. They stayed that way until the end of the far turn, when Petrov made a bold move to the front. Uncontested had nothing left in the tank, and gave up the lead easily.
It looked like Petrov would take the race with ease, but down the middle of the stretch came One Liner, dueling Petrov for about a sixteenth of a mile before he kicked it into a higher gear and left him in the dust.
It was One Liner’s third win in a row. Uncontested faded to sixth.
