It’s rare to see a longshot win a Derby prep race; usually the favorite overcomes the weak competition, or at least a second or third favorite will win.
That’s what makes Zakaroff’s win in the El Camino Real so remarkable. The gelding saved himself with a ride along the rail for most of the race, and then made his move in the homestretch, fighting off Ann Arbor Eddie to win by a half length.
The longshot took advantage of a slow pace, then went three wide entering the homestretch to find a hole. Ann Arbor Eddie drifted wide, inhibiting the front-running Tribal Storm to slow down, eventually causing him to fade to fourth. Immediately a stewards’ inquiry went up, and eventually Ann Arbor Eddie was disqualified, moving down to fourth place. More Power to Him was elevated to second and Tribal Storm took third.
