It seems coming off the pace is working for two-year-olds.
In ninth place at one time, McCraken made a beeline for the front on the far turn, battled with Wild Shot down the homestretch, and finally pulled away in the final 100 yards to register his third win in as many tries.
Wild Shot stalked the leader, Uncontested, who had traveled far from his outside position to take the lead into the clubhouse turn. When Uncontested tired heading into the homestretch, Wild Shot took a short lead, but McCraken was already bearing down on the leader. The two raced neck and neck down the homestretch, with McCraken taking the lead and winning by a length. Warrior’s Club finished third.
All of McCraken’s wins have come at Churchill Downs, where the Kentucky Derby is held.
