drf.com released its 2-year-old weekly divisional rankings yesterday, and leading the pack is Chasing Aces, who won his maiden in a fast time at Del Mar, posting a 101 Beyer figure after a poor debut a month before (he finished second but posted a 73 Beyer).
Second on the list is Straight Fire, who finished second to Chasing Aces at Del Mar but bounced back with an impressive win August 6 (98 Beyer). Third is Classic Empire, a half-brother of American Pharoah, who has won both of his races so far.
Rounding out the top 10 are Theory, who won his debut at Saratoga; Klimt; Three Rules; Syndergaard; Gunnevara; Bitumen and Recruiting Ready.
Will any of these young two-year-olds be a Kentucky Derby contender? Will any of them even race in it? It’s way too early to tell, but we’ll watch them closely to see if they make any progress as the season rolls on in preparation for the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile. And then there’s making the transition from two-year-old to three-year-old. There’s still a long way to go.
