Brody’s Cause Bounces Back, Takes Blue Grass

After his disappointing seventh-place finish in the Tampa Bay Derby everyone had counted Brody’s Cause out of the Derby picture.

Not so fast.

Like Exaggerator, Brody’s Cause came from way off the pace to win the $1,000,000 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland, overcoming a tired field down the homestretch.

Like Exaggerator, he was some 10 lengths off the lead, set by pace-setter Laoban, and like Exaggerator, he didn’t make his move until the pack headed for home. The trip wasn’t as easy for Brody’s Cause, though, as either he was tiring or the front-runners showed a little more staying power. He battled it out with Laoban, then held off Cards of Stone and Star Hill to win by a 1 1/2 lengths over My Man Sam, who also came from off the pace.

Cherry Wine finished third. The time for the 1 1/8 mile race was 1:50.20.
