Cupid Shoots Arrow in Whitmore’s Heart in Rebel

Lightly-raced Cupid, who had just recently broken his maiden, scored an impressive wire-to-wire victory in the $900,000 Rebel Stakes, winning by a 1 1/4 lengths over favored Whitmore.

Despite racing in only his fourth start, Cupid still went off as the 5-2 second choice and quickly established the lead going into the clubhouse turn. He had no real challengers until he entered the stretch, when Whitmore had weaved his way through from back in the pack to mount a furious challenge.

It looked as if Whitmore would run away with it, but as soon as he pulled even with Cupid, it was as if he had hit a wall; he couldn’t get past him. The two battled it out for just about 50 yards before Cupid moved on past to post the victory.

It was a record sixth victory at the Rebel for trainer Bob Baffert, who most recently won here last year with American Pharoah, on his way to a Triple Crown.
