That’s what a lot of people were saying as Danzing Candy took the early lead in the $400,000 San Felipe Stakes and never looked back, beating favorite Mor Spirit by 1 3/4 lengths.
It’s not that the son of Twirling Candy was not known by people; he paid $13 to win. It’s just that until today, he was nowhere to be found on the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard. He went through fast fractions but still had enough in the tank to hold off a hard-charging Mor Spirit.
Exaggerator, last in the backstretch, made a furious move on the rail and then went to the outside to challenge Danzing Candy, but didn’t have enough to pass the leader. He seemed to give up after that, fading to third.
The victory muddies the Derby picture even more, with yet another 50 points going to a horse that was not expected to be in the Derby picture at all.
Smokey Image lost for the first time in his career, finishing a disappointing fifth.
