Gun Runner Wins First Big Race of 2016

Gun Runner outran his rivals down the stretch, holding off a hard-charging Mo Tom and Forevamo to win the $400,000 Risen Star Stakes Saturday.

The win, worth 50 points in the Kentucky Derby Points Standings, vaults Gun Runner into front-runner status in the race to the Derby.

As is the case for most winning rides this year, Gun Runner stalked the leaders into the backstretch, then made his move on the far turn, followed closely by Forevamo. Gun Runner opened up a lead, then saw that lead narrow as Forevamo took one final stab at him.

The winning margin was 1/2 length. Gun Runner finished theĀ 1 1/16 mile race in 1:43.94, earning a Beyer speed number of 90.

Mo Tom suffered a horrible ride, having to be checked entering the stretch as his jockey Corey Lanerie tried to find the rail but was cut off by a tiring Bistraya. He still rallied to take third place away from Candy My Body.
